August 24–William Kent Kruger, Lightning Strike
We know this author from Ordinary Grace and This Tender Land. He has also written eighteen books in the Cork O’Conner series. If you haven’t read any of the Cork O’Conner books, do not worry. Lightning Strike is actually the prequel to the series. Kruger looks at his protagonist as an adolescent who is just beginning his interest in solving crimes. It is a ‘stand alone’ story as well as an ideal way to decide if you might want to begin the series.
September 14–Colin Whitehead, Harlem Shuffle
Colin Whitehead is the author of two recent books that take a realistic yet sometimes fantasy-laced look at the plight of enslaved Africans as they persevere from slavery through Jim Crow. These reviting books have both won the Pulitzer Prize even though they may be difficult to read due to violence and injustice. Whitehead’s newest book, Harlem Shuffle takes a different tone with a lighthearted look at Harlem in the 60’s. While the story is about a Black family man who gets caught up in a web of gangsters, it is also, according to one reviewer, ‘a joy to read.’
September 24-Anthony Doerr, Cloud Cuckoo Land
Anthony Doerr’s All The Light We Cannot See was far more than an ordinary historical novel. Doerr’s use of vivid imagery, multiple themes and unforgettable characters all contributed to the book’s popularity. Now Doerr has written another book that promises to be even more challenging than All The Light We Cannot See. In Cloud Cuckoo Land (strange title, I know), Doerr explores the power of the written word and the lasting effect it can have on people. Five main characters, over 600 pages spanning hundreds of centuries and prose that makes it all worthwhile–that’s the scoop on this new book. Linda Malcolm will soon post her review of the book since she has read an advance copy. She can’t say enough about it!!
October 5–Alice Hoffman, The Book of Magic
Fans of Alice Hoffman will know that her latest book is the final in a series about the Owens family. The book stands alone, however, and will interest anyone who enjoys multi-generational books about relationships and the love that binds families together.
October 5–Amore Towles, The Lincoln Highway
From the author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility, this new helping of richly layered historical fiction concerns 18-year-old Emmett Watson. Recently released from a work farm, Watson and his eight-year-old brother run afoul of the law in rural Nebraska, circa 1954. Readers of Towles know that his books require careful reading and reap huge rewards. The Lincoln Highway is a differnt type of book from a well-respected author.
October 25–Janet Beard, The Ballad of Laurel Springs
Janet Beard, author of The Atomic City Girls, has written a new novel about a family of women in East Tennessee who are haunted by a legacy of violence but redeemed by the folk music passed down to them through the generations. A ‘must read’ for me because the book sounds a lot like a Lee Smith novel. Lee Smith is my very favorite author and East Tennessee is a part of my legacy.
