Three Interesting Biographies
*about women
You have no doubt heard about each of these three women, but you may not know much about who they really are. Maybe preconceived ideas about Kate Spade and questions such as “who’s Octavia Butler.” You may decide you want to get to know them better, and the following books will be a good starting point:

Dawn Staley is almost a legend in South Carolina and certainly one of the best known coaches in women’s basketball. How did she get to where she is today? Read her biography to find out.
We Might Just Make It After All by Elyce Arons is the biography of Kate Spade. Arons and Spade were best of friends from their college days
Imagine two young women trying to make it in NYC in the 90’s. Sounds like a TV show, doesn’t it? Spade and Arons lived the dream by cofounding a multi-billion-dollar fashion company. Did you ever own a Kate Spade pocketbook? At one point in time, they were all the rage and very expensive. I don’t think I knew that Spade died in 2018 apparently by suicide. Her talent for design and her business accumen were noteworthy, and it made me sad to learn about her death.

Since I don’t usually read Science Fiction, I did not recognize Octavia Butler as the important author that she is. Susana M. Morros has written a new biography entitled Positive Obsession: the Life and Times of Octavia Butler. Morris delves into what drove Butler to write science fiction. “At that time nearly all professional science-fiction writers were white men”, states Butler. “As much as I loved science fiction and fantasy, what was I doing? Well, whatever it was, I couldn’t stop.” And science fiction fans are very lucky!
