A Few Words about Wordle
Several weeks ago, friends suggested that I try the word game ‘Wordle.’ While I resisted for a while, I found that solving the puzzle each day was great fun. After all, everyone is doing it!! Perhaps you will be interested in the following insights to the game:
1. The founder –Josh Wardle came to the United States from Wales to earn an MFA from the University of Oregan. He majored in digital art and worked for Reddit in Silicon Valley. While working there, Wardle created Wordle for his partner because she is a great fan of word games. He never intended to make money from the invention, but now he is a millionaire!! About the sale of the game to the New York Times, Wardle says, “My biggest sense, actually, right now, isn’t joy. It’s relief.” He wants no publicity. He only wants people who play Wordle to enjoy it.
2. The new owner—It is no wonder that the New York Times was willing to pay a large sum of money for Wordle. On November 1 of 2021, there were 90 people playing the game. By the end of December, there were 300,000. Now there are over 10 million people who play the game daily. The NYT says that they don’t plan to charge people to play Wordle. Wardle certainly hopes that is true!
3. HInts on solving— If you feel like reading these hints is cheating, then don’t continue reading. Actully, I alredy thought of this first hint
–Start with a word that has many vowels in it (many have suggested the word ‘adieu’)
–Use common letters such as S and R (suggested by a crossword expert)
–Never put an S at the end of the word. Wordle does not use plural words.
–If you ever taught reading OR even if you simply read a lot, you will be aware of common consonent clusters that begin or end a word.
