In honor of International Women’s Day we’re excited to share sessions from Charleston Literary Festival’s past that celebrate the strength and resilience of women.

Jyoti Thottam at CLF 2022 – Watch as Jyoti Thottam captivates us with a never-before-told story about two pioneering groups of women in the 1940s: six intrepid nuns from the Appalachians and a set of young Indian trainee nurses, including Thottam’s mother, who joined them to establish a hospital that still exists to this day in one of the poorest states in India.

Lucy Worsley at CLF 2023 – The audience was treated to a hugely entertaining session with Lucy Worsley who regaled us with stories about the Queen of Crime Agatha Christie. Worsley’s authoritative biography makes a strong argument for Christie as a true pioneer in a genre largely dominated by men.

Elisabeth Griffith at CLF 2022 – Elisabeth Griffith spoke to us about her illuminating book of women’s history Formidable: “An essential history of the one-hundred years of struggle between 1920-2020 by both Black and White women in America to achieve equal rights” (Hillary Rodham Clinton). Her book recounts divisions alongside victories in a engaging, relevant and sweeping chronicle of women’s fight for equality.

John Wood Sweet at CLF 2023 – John Wood Sweet presented his book, The Sewing Girl’s Tale: A Story of Crime and Consequences in Revolutionary America, a true story of extraordinary bravery. The book chronicles a trial for the assault of Lanah Sawyer, a young woman in New York City, and explores its contemporary relevance. The 18th-century courtroom drama is marked by the determination of a young victim seeking justice at a time when the laws of society were stacked against women.
