Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead
Maggie Shipstead is an author I had not heard much about. It seems she has written two other noteworthy books: Seating Arrangements, a romantic comedy set in New England, and Astonish Me, a novel about the complex world of ballet.
Her new book, Great Circle, has been getting a lot of attention and rave reviews. It’s heralded as the best book of this summer, and that’s appropriate because the book is VERY long. One may need an entire summer to read it! Shipstead starts the story off with her protagonist as an infant rescued from a burning boat becoming a young girl desperately longing to fly. And fly she does while the reader flies along. Marian Graves’ lifelong goal is to circumnavigate the globe by flying over the North and South Poles. Does Marian reach her goal? Switch forward a century late to another female character Hadley Baxter who is cast to portray Marian in a movie. So what do the two women have in common? How does the author make a full ‘circle’ in her novel? The book is worth reading to find the answers to these questions.
