“in the room where it happened”

Today, as I walked down Fort Johnson Road to Fort Johnson, I thought about the Larsen book I am trying to finish for a book club. I featured it on this blog in 2024 and expected to like it as I did other Larsen books I have read. Well, I’m having a hard time with it, as it turns out. Of course, I was not in the “room” where it happened, but I was at the “site” where it happened. Yes, the first shots of the Civil War were fired from Fort Johnson, and I stood very near where the shells flew over to Fort Sumter.

Above you will see the image of two markers at the site and a look at Fort Sumter from there. If interested, you will read good reviews and not so good reviews of the book. From my perspective, Larsen included too many details. The book is also overly long. It is, however, historically riveting.

  1. I am a history nut and yes the book was long but it was a wonderful read. I even delayed leaving for going “up north” to go to the recreation of the start of the war a few years ago. Look forward to the audio of this book.

Now Chicago worlds fair, Devil in the White City, book was way harder to read and very graphic.
    Thanks for highlighting this book
