The Poetry of Amanda Gorman
Many of us think that Amanda Gorman ‘stole the show’ at the Presidential Inauguration January 20, 2021. Dressed in a fetching yellow coat, she looked like an American Girl doll. Someone should have put a stool behind the lecturn to let us better see her face. And then she began to recite her inaugural poem. That’s when the magic started, and we saw into the heart and soul of this brilliant young woman. She held attendees and TV viewers alike transfixed with her artful words and flowing delivery. Now Gorman is a best selling poet almost overnight–a well-deserved honor.
Amanda Gorman is the inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of the United States. She is a committed activist who works on the local, national, and international levels to support girls’ education and empowerment. Amanda’s activism and poetry have been featured on the Today Show, PBS Kids, and CBS This Morning, and in The New York Times, Vogue, Essence, and O, The Oprah Magazine. She is also the author of the forthcoming picture book Change Sings illustrated by #1 New York Times bestselling illustrator Loren Long. After graduating from Harvard University, she now lives in Los Angeles. Please visit theamandagorman.com.

Listening to Amanda Gorman was like watching the sunrise after a long dark winter. Her inspirational words lifted listeners like me, reminding us of the natural goodness in this world, of our obligation to leave it better for those who follow.
Thanks to your post I’ve preordered Change Sings and am anxiously awaiting my September surprise.

I wish we didn’t have to wait so long for her book!!
You can find Amanda’s interview with Anderson Cooper on YouTube. It’s delightful. We’ve been reading and re-watching her recite “The Hill We Climb” and the words are so powerful. The Scripture she quotes “everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid” comes from the Old Testament book of Micah.
Thanks for letting us know about the YouTube interview. Also where the scripture comes from!!
Thank you so much for starting this! Amanda did an interview a few days before the inauguration, and all I could think about was “are you sure she’s just 22? So wise, so poised, so young.” Just incredible. I hope to follow her as she takes off into her life’s universe and shares her art with us.
I hope so too, Becki. I just keep reading her inaugural poem and hear something different every time.
