Words Matter

I know you have heard the phrase ‘words matter.’ And yes, indeed, they do. Words can harm or charm, encourage or outrage, inspire or deflate. OK, enought of that!! Some words are simply overused, misused or useless, and the folks at Lake Superior State University have, since 1976, vented about the most tiresome examples of such. Each year they publish a list for The Banished Words Archive. Former words include: ‘classic’, ‘surely’, ‘user friendly’ and ‘not so much.’ My favorite is ‘it is what it is’, a term I despise despite the fact that I have been known to say it!! So, what are some of the words that made the 2022 List?

No worries–the list makers feel that this term is a poor excuse for ‘Your’re welcome.’ Ever said it?

At the end of the day–Banished initially in 1999, this term just won’t go away!

That being said–Pompous postering according to the list makers. Just say what you have to say already.

Deep dive–Certainly not a literal meaning. Noone should dive in shallow water.

After reading this entry, you will probably continue to let these phrases slip into your informal language. At least, however, you may think about them either before or after you say them.
