Charleston Literary Festival begins November 7
The 45 events of this year’s festival will take place at the Dock Street Theatre. People from around Charleston simply say The Dock Street! Having scoured the events thoroughly, and knowing how difficult it is to go to all of them, we have pointed out a few authors and their books that are of special interest to us.
Tim Bouverie, author of Allies At War–November 8, 5 p.m. Bouverie’s book centers on the three main allied leaders of World War II–Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. He documents their interactions and ideology in a highly readable new book.
Glory Edim, author of Gather Me–November 8, 7 p.m. Edim founded the renowned book club Well-Read Black Girl. Her new book tells her own story of how books throughout her life have been her refuge and a light into understanding herself.
Dava Sobel, author of The Elements of Marie Curie, not only chronicles the brilliant scientist’s research, but also Curie’s impact on the 45 aspiring female scientists she metored and continued to inspire. Curie remains without doubt the most famous female scientist.
Gary Shteyngart, author of Vera, or Faith, shares his newest novel which is about a blended family of Russian, Jewish, Korean and New Engladn WASPs thrown together in the most unlikely of circumstances. Shteyngart is a inspiring writer who can be quite amusing.
Edda Fields-Black writes about her ancestor’s participation in the Combahee River Raid led by Harriet Tubman during the Civil War. Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War is the first book that has gone into the raid in detail.
Of course, I have mentioned only a very few of the authors appearing in Charleston for the 2025 Literary Festival. For more information, go to the festival website and choose for yourself.
