Hello Dolly!

Those of you who have read my blog know that I admire and respect Dolly Parton. I certainly know that she isn’t a fool. I used to think she was a bit fake, and some of her IS fake, but underneath her show biz persona is a brilliant and talented mind with a knack for business and music, and a tender heart with a love of family, children and reading. This new biography Ain’t Nobody’s Fool by is one of many books about Dolly, but Dolly at 80 is a much more complex person than she was in her younger days. The book charts her upbringing and career and her incredible generosity. Just a few days ago, Parton made a ‘transformational’ donation to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, which will now be named for her.
Parton and I were both born in the hills of East Tennessee. I had a much more priviledged upbringing than she did and, obviously, was less talented and ambitious! Oh well…… When I hear her talk, I travel back in time and place. When I hear her sing, I am happy.
LIke me, Parton loves to read. And, like me, her favorite Southern writer is Lee Smith. In a recent article in Women’s World, Parton revealed her alltime favorite books. When asked what book she would want to have with her if stranded on a desert island, she said she better have a Bible there because she might need to cram before a bad fate awaited her!! Always lighthearted but very serious about her literacy mission, Dolly Parton is one of a kind. Click below to see the insighful interview. Beware of the many adds to navigate around.
