Remember Judy Blume?

I haven’t thought about Judy Blume for a long time. That is, until today when a friend who recently returned from Key West told me a great story about her. Little did I know that Blume owned a book store in Key West. It’s called Books and Books. While in Key West, my friend visited the book story and asked a nice woman if Judy Blume ever came into the store. The nice woman said, “Why yes, I’m Judy Blume.” An hour later, my friend left the store with books, book suggestions and a lot to say about the now 85 year old author of sometimes controversial children’s books.

During the conversation with Blume, she mentioned four books that my friend should read ASAP. In case you are interested, they are:

Someone Else’s Shoes by Jo Jo Moyes

Ms. Demeanor by Elinor Lipman

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow: A novel by Gabrielle Zevin

Blue Marlin, a novella by Lee Smith

Now, before we leave the story about Judy Blume, it is worth noting two things:

  1. For the first time ever, Blume has authorized one of her books to be made into a movie. Remember Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret? The movie is by Lionsgate and will be released in the U.S. April , 28, 2023.
  2. Judy Blume tells her own story in a new documentary entitled “Judy Blume Forever.” The film premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival. It starts streaming on Amazon Prime on April 28, the same date that Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret is released. The movie documents a career of 50 years and focuses on topics that are as relevant today as they were then.
