Snuggle Up with Winter Reads

Now that January is here, we can focus more on reading! But what will we read? In the next few weeks, I will be featuring books that have come out at the very end of 2023 or early in 2024. Read some of these books now so that you will be able to offer suggestions for you book clubs when they choose new books in May.

This post will highlight three Historical Fiction books, so here goes…..

Above the Salt by Katherine Vaz is set in Civil War times but starts out in Portugal. It’s a little different from some books we may have read so you might want to listen to the author talk about it.

The Roaring Days of Zora Lily: A Novel by Noelle Salazar fast forwards the reader to the Roaring Twenties in the United States. In 2023, a Smithsonian Institute costume conservator is working on an exhibit of movie costumes from the “Roarin 20’s” when she discovers a hidden label inside a dress worn by Greta Garbo. The name on the label is Zora Lily! The book then goes back to the 20’s and we learn the story behind the label.

The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan is a novel that begins in 1930 in Malaya when Cecily, the main character and mother of the family, decides to become a spy for the Japanese. The story spans several decades and becomes very complicated, but not so complicated that the reader can’t be swept up by the action and the characters and the intrigue. Good Morning America GMA Book Club Pick states, “Vanessa Chan is the kind of author who can completely trasport you to another time and place…it is a total page turner.”
